Message from G/M county selectors

GREATER Manchester officials will meet soon to draw up a plan to revive the county’s flagging fortunes.

The once-successful GM outfit endured a disappointing 2016 Endsleigh County Championship campaign, finishing bottom of their four-team group.

GM opened with a two-chalks defeat to South Yorkshire before drawing with Potteries and District, and losing by 51 to group winners Shropshire who are now in the final.

Their campaign was a far cry from the halcyon days when a team packed with stars regularly won team bowling’s most prestigious championship.

The last time GM won the British title was in 2008. But they triumphed six times from 1997 to 2008 with a team containing many top-class performers.

GM do not boast such strength in depth during the current era, and it it is Warwick and Worcester who are the present kingpins, winning the British title for the last four years with a team containing many superb young players.

But GM are determined to embark on a journey which will make them competitive against the very best counties.

A meeting of selectors will be held in sept to discuss ways in which GM can plot a successful way forward.

A spokesman for GM said: “It is clear that the county is underperforming and there are a number of reasons for that.

“Clearly, we do not boast the strength in depth we once had when many of the game’s finest players turned out for GM and provided formidable opposition to rival counties.

“There are many individuals who are proud to play for GM and give their all, but equally there are players out there who are not making themselves available for selection for whatever reason.

“We desperately need to get some of these players back in the ranks and we will spend the next few months trying to get them back on side by promoting a vision of a competitive and motivated GM side with all the players desperate to wear the blue county shirt.

“The selectors occasionally cop for a bit of criticism for team selection and choice of home greens, but their efforts are honest and genuine.

“We will take on board what the players tell us with regard to personnel and greens, but these are not always straightforward issues and there is a very quick turnaround between matches, with teams and greens having to be picked within days.

“What we need, above all, is to be able to field our strongest side on a regular basis and we will be working towards achieving that during the remainder of the bowls season and through the winter.

“A successful county side has a knock-on effect, promoting better and more competitive bowling in its member leagues and we will do everything we can to ensure GM reaches its full potential in the near future.”
